The beautiful entrance to the Hall of Maps (Gallery of Maps) - Vatican Museums
My favourite room of the whole Vatican Museum! the Hall of Maps (or 'Gallery of Maps'), in this 120 meter long room, 40 large maps of different regions of Italy can be seen on the walls that date back to the 16th century and the ceiling is simply jaw dropping! - Vatican Museums
The frescos on the left side are maps from the east of Italy, on the right side from the west of Italy. Italy didn’t actually exist at the time of the paintings, all these maps were imagined at the time! - Vatican Museums
Geographer Ignazio Danzi made the frescoes with the maps from about 1581 to 1583, this one of Italy represents it as it was imagined in the 16th century - Vatican Museums
The detail of the Hall of Maps is actually overwhelming, this tiny fraction of the curved ceiling is a great example - so much too see in this one tiny space! - Vatican Museums
